How Do I Video InterviewRecently Fired Job Seekers

How Do I Video InterviewRecently Fired Job SeekersEvery candidate comes with their own set of unique einstellungsgesprching challenges. Thats why were tackling how to video interview different types of job seekers with this how to series. Today well be talking about how to connect with a recently fired job seeker in the video interview. Is this job seeker all wrong for your position because aelendher company cut them loose? Or are they exactly the talent your company needs? In todays tough economic landscape, where 7.9 percent of Americans are currently unemployed, there are more candidates than ever before hitting the job search after a firing. While companies may traditionally shy away from fired candidates, this practice could result in losing out on the talent you need to move your company forward and improve your corporate culture. So how can you tell the difference in the video interview between a fired job seeker who will fit like a glove into your corporate culture and a fired job seeker who will be nothing but trouble? It all comes down to how your candidate answers the big question Why were you fired? Here are some things to look for when your job seeker answers this big question in the video interviewGood Candidate Explains Honestly and ClearlyYou want to know the truth and nothing but the truth when it comes to why your candidate was cut loose from their last position. Candidates who try to duck the question arent the kind of honest job seekers who will become employees with integrity. You want candidates who impress you with their ability to quickly, clearly, and honestly answer why they were given a pink slip.To ensure the candidate is being honest with you in the video interview, youll probably want to do a little follow-up. If the candidate has authorized you to call their last place of employment, give them a ring and see if you can confirm the story. If youre able to confirm the two stories match, then your candidate will likely be an honest and reliable worker.Bad Candidate Blames OthersYou want a candidate who will blend seamlessly into your corporate culture and bring value to your organization. Job seekers who use the video interview as an outlet to shift blame for their firing onto others likely arent very good team players. You need someone in your organization who will work well with others and take responsibility for their own actions. If your job seeker cant own their behavior, hiring them is a good way to ruin your hard-won corporate culture.Good Candidate Explains What Theyve LearnedEvery storm cloud comes with a silver lining, and good employees can learn from even their biggest mistakes. If your candidate sees their firing as a learning opportunity and potential for growth, this is a good sign.In the workplace, everyone is bound to make a few mistakes. What separates good and bad employees is the ability to learn from these errors so theyre not repeated again.Bad Candidate Is DefensiveBeing fired is tough on any candidate, but you want employees ready to move forward and grow in their careers. Candidates who are overly defensive about their firing have clearly not moved on from this slight. More importantly, theyre unable to take responsibility for their own actions. You need a job seeker ready to move on to the next big career challenge, not someone stuck in the past. Before hiring a recently fired candidate, use the video interview to determine whether this candidate has learned from the experience and whether they will have a positive or negative impact on your corporate culture. Being fired isnt the end of the world, and it shouldnt be the end of the line for talented job seekers interested in your open positions. What are some ways you evaluate recently fired job seekers in the video interview? Self-knowledge is a prerequisite for a happy life

Self-knowledge is a prerequisite for a happy lifeSelf-knowledge is a prerequisite for a happy lifeGrowth in life and career starts with self-knowledge.Socrates was once asked to sum up what all philosophical commandments could be reduced to, he replied Know yourself. The phrase, Know thyself, is centuries old, but its still relevant today. Research from psychologist Daniel Goleman shows that self-awareness is crucial for all levels of success.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHow well do you think you know yourself? Most peoples knowledge about themselves is distorted.Princeton University psychologist Emily Pronin, who specializes in human self-perception and decision making, calls the mistaken belief in privileged access the introspection illusion. The way we view ourselves is distorted, but we do not realize it. As a result, our self-image has surprisingly little to do with our ac tions, writesSteve Ayan.Self-knowledge is about understanding your real (and true) needs, desires, goals, weaknesses, and everything else that makes you tick. It requires a deep understanding of your past and current self.Your personal theories (self-narratives) about who you are, influence how you behave. An accurate sense of who you are makes self-improvement possible.Self-knowledge (self-awareness) is insanely hard to acquire, though. Some people engage the services of therapists to help them understand themselves better because our minds are skilled at hiding the truth about ourselves from our conscious grasp.Lao Tzu, the ancient Chinese philosopher, once said, He who knows others is wise he who knows himself is enlightened.A bit of introspection can open up so many opportunities to create the life you want?- ?whether you want to build a successful career, a strong relationship, or life your best life.Think of it this way you cant truly take care of yourself if you dont know what your needs are, and you cant improve yourself if you dont know your best qualities and the ones that are, uh,more challenging, saysTerri Pous.Your true self is the real you, and is made up of your true character, values, desires, emotions, and beliefs. The sum total of who you are as a person, not as a son, daughter, brother, sister, husband, or wife. The true self as it really is.The search for your true self can take a while. To have knowledge of your true self would be a genuine cognitive or intellectual achievement that will be the beginning of a happy, meaningful and fulfilling life.Developing self-knowledge allows you to understand how youve been shaped by the many cultural and social expectations around you and what really motivates your goals, desires and actions in life.Self-awareness opens the door to wisdom. In her book,Insight Why Were elend as Self-Aware as We Think, and How Seeing Ourselves Clearly Helps Us Succeed at Work and in Life, Tasha Eurich explainsThere is strong scientific evidence that people who know themselves and how others see them are happier. They make smarter decisions. They have better personal and professional relationships. They raise more mature children. Theyre smarter, superior students who choose better careers. Theyre more creative, more confident, and better communicators. Theyre less aggressive and less likely to lie, cheat, and steal. Theyre better performers at work who get more promotions. Theyre more effective leaders with more enthusiastic employees. They even lead more profitable companies some research has even shown that self-awareness is the single greatest predictor of leadership success. It pays to embark on one of the most exciting journeys into our deepest, most elusive selves. Your success depends on it.You owe it to yourself to find the real you. The path to your success starts with a critical look in the mirror. If you look hard enough (and often) you will develop self-knowledge.Your self lies before you like an open book. If you dont have time to explore, read, and deeply understand who you are, you will continue to pursue a false self that only guarantees emptiness.Oliver C. Schultheiss of Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nrnberg in Germany has shown that our sense of well-being tends to grow as our conscious goals and unconscious motives become more aligned or congruent. For example, we should not slave away at a career that gives us money and power if these goals are of little importance to us,writesSteve Ayan of Scientific American.Aligning our conscious goals and unconscious motives is a difficult task. Only a few people can achieve such harmony, but its not impossible. To improve your self-knowledge, start with quantified self-loggingOne of the best ways to increase self-awareness is to write down what you think you know about yourself and everything you unconsciously know about your true self.Writing about life experiences improves our physical and mental health, accord ing to research from Southern Methodist University. How much you confront your lifes challenges (both easy and difficult) defines your level of self-knowledge.The basic idea of this exercise is that, if you collect enough data about yourself, you can make improvements based on that information.Start your self-introspection by diary.View yourself at a distance from your conscious self?- ?for example, in solitude. And write out what you think you are now your beliefs, values, morals, traits and goals. And what, or who contributed to shaping them.Do the saatkorn for your unconscious self. What do your hidden self really want from life. Try to imagine, as vividly and in as much detail as possible, how things would be different from your life now.Dont rush the process. Take your time. You cant know yourself in a day.Once you have enough information about your two selves, begin to create harmony by pursuing some of your unconscious goals. You will be surprised at the results. This process (fo r you alone) can help you clarify the distinctive nature of your personalities?- ?what you think you want or know about yourself, what you need to watch out for and what your true priorities and potential might be.The best part of a self-knowledge exercise is that, when youre feeling lost or every time things feel out of control, you can whip out your journal and reconnect with your true self.Your conversation with yourself should be only with yourself.Closing thoughtsBecoming self-aware is the basic foundation for creating the life you want. Your happiness depends on it.But improving your self-knowledge wont happen in a day.Sometimes it takes years of reflection, introspection, and difficult conversations with people you affect directly or indirectly. But as you begin your journey of self-awareness, you will find get more comfortable being your true self, transparent, and even vulnerable. You will create harmony between your current self and unconscious or true self. This article fir st appeared on Medium.hr /You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Pros and Cons of Label Record Deals

Pros and Cons of Label Record DealsPros and Cons of Label Record DealsFor most musicians, scoring a major label record deal is at the top of their to-do list, and for good reason. Having one of the large labels working on behalf of your music can be your ticket to the big time. However, there are downsides to being on a major label roster. When youre trying to decide whether your ideal home is an indie or a major, keep the following major record label pros and cons in mind. Money and Connections at Major Labels Even with major-label music sales declining and the industry as a whole struggling to keep up with changes in the way people purchase and listen to music, major labels totenstill have a huge financial advantage over just about every indie label. When your label has a lot of money, that means theyll be able to spend a lot of money promoting your record - which is exactly what you want. It also means they may be able to offer you a large advance and invest a lot in recording , touring, video shoots and other opportunities for you. Additionally, most major labels have been in the business for decades and have long established connections that help you reach your music career goals. Major Record Labels vs. Indie Labels Alas, size can matter when it comes to record labels. Major labels are behind the vast majority of music sold, and this scale of operations can bring many advantages. First, they can get the best deals on manufacturing, advertising, and other expenses since they do business in such enormous bulk (they have way more purchasing power than indie labels). Second, because of all of the artists on their roster, they can pull some pretty big strings in the media. Heres a common scenario a major label may call up a big music magazine and say, hey, if you want to interview (insert mega-selling artist), we suggest you review/feature (insert brand new, unknown label signing). This is great for you, if youre that new label signing, because you get instant press in all of the top spots, giving you maximum exposure overnight. Downsides of Major Record Labels A lot of major labels sign a lot of musicians and throw out a lot of music, just to see what will stick. As a new signing, except in very special circumstances, youre likely to find yourself fighting for attention. If your music doesnt start selling, then you can find yourself with a record out that isnt getting much vorrcken and a label whose representatives dont return your phone calls. Staff turnover at major labels can be high and you may wake up one day to find out that the person who loved your music is no longer working at the label. The new person who takes over your album may not be such a big fan, and suddenly, no one is too interested in making your album a priority. You can include a key man clause in your contract to try to avoid this, but often the bargaining power is against you when you sign a major label deal, so scoring this set up is not guaranteed. M any dedicated music lovers work on the major label side of the music industry. However, not everyone who works at major labels loves music. Youll find a higher concentration of people who are in the business strictly for the money in major labels than you will at indie labels, and that sometimes ends up rubbing musicians the wrong way.

Use this informational interview email sample to build industry relationships

Use this informational interview email sample to build industry relationships Use this informational interview email sample to build industry relationships Landing an informational interview can help you build relationships all across the industry. An informational interview acts as an authentic way to learn more about an industry, make a connection, and build a relationship that can be mutually beneficial in the future. Follow this informational interview email sample to impress new contacts and excite them to help excel your career. What’s an informational interview? The term “informational interview” describes exactly what will go down during the conversation with your professional contact. During this discussion, you’re not asking for a job or help on a project, but for information about a specific position, company, or industry. Use this list of  questions to ask in an informational interview to structure your meeting in a casual, but productive, fashion.Informational interviews can be helpful at any stage of your career, but they are especially helpful for a young professional with no industry contacts who is attempting to l and an entry level job.So how do you land an informational interview? The first step is to find contacts who will be willing to help you. Professionals with whom you have a loose affiliation, or a weak tie, are more likely to agree to speak with you.  For example, a professional who attended the same university as you and participated in the same club will probably be more willing to help you than someone you picked at random. If someone close to you knows a professional in your industry, ask them to connect you.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! You can also use the internet to find weak ties that exist between you and someone in your industry. For example, you can use LinkedIn to find contacts that attended your university and work both in your desired industry and geographical location. When you meet with a professional contact it’s important that you lead the conversatio n with specific informational interview questions. You don’t want to waste this contact’s time, and you want to make sure to get all you can out of the time you have with them. Bob Martin, the assistant dean for internships and career placement in the Bellasario College of Communications at Penn State University, explains that you want to ask a contact for an hour of their time. The first half hour should focus on the professional’s career, not yours. After about a half hour, start to pivot the conversation towards yourself. Ask the professional to take a look at your resume and e-portfolio. Tell him or her about your job search strategies, and ask for advice on if you should be doing anything differently.Use the informational interview email sample below to reach out to weak ties.Informational interview email sampleDear Mr./Ms. (Professional’s name),Good morning. I am a senior (area of study) major at (university’s name). I was searching on LinkedIn when I came across you r profile. I see that you work as a (position title) at (company name).  I also saw that you attended (university’s name) and participated in (club name), just like me.  As I will be graduating this upcoming May, I’d love to buy you lunch or coffee sometime soon and hear about your professional path. I know you must be extremely busy, but I’d love if you can set aside any amount of time to speak with me over the next few weeks.  Your career is inspiring to me, and I’d love to learn more about how you navigated the (area of focus) industry.Best wishes,(Your name)Notes about the informational interview email sampleAn informational interview is not the time to ask a new professional contact for a job, so the mention of that should stay far away from the initial email.Additionally, the informational interview email sample includes how the sender found the professional’s contact information as well as their connection to each other, which are important pieces of information to include. The connection will make the contact more inclined to want to provide you with advice and advance your career. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How the Grinch stole appreciation at work (and how to get it back)

How the Grinch stole appreciation at work (and how to get it back) How the Grinch stole appreciation at work (and how to get it back) It’s a Christmas classic. Every year we enjoy the journey of the Grinch - from ninja-level curmudgeon, to repenting of his ways and then saving the day.The Grinch remains an interesting character. He’s so filled with anger and resentment that it clouds his vision and certainly his judgment. He embarks on a journey that he thinks will fill the hole in his small and fragile heart. Yet, as we know, the results of his mayhem left him cold and wondering why there was no joy or satisfaction. It was not until his ‘ah ha’ moment that things changed for the better. Now, apply this to the typical workplace. Sometimes, the “grinches” are easy to spot. They are the cold, angry, miserable people who can steal happiness by just entering a room. And there are those who have what I call an “inner Grinch.” Although they appear to be brimming with good intentions, something isn’t right. They think their superficial attempts to interact with others, especially in the area of recogniti on and appreciation, are just fine. Their inner Grinch whispers to them that the mug with candy they give, the few words of faint praise at a staff meeting or the token gift card will fully satisfy the recipient. In reality, they are stingy and cursory in showing appreciation.Despite all that they try to do, these individuals are discouraged by their results. They had hoped that bestowing recognition would work out better. They have looked for but haven’t seen any positive results resulting from their one-size fits all approach to appreciation. Then they become disillusioned, questioning whether this “appreciation stuff” really works at all.Eventually, since they feel like their efforts are ignored (or rebuffed), they make negative assumptions about their co-workers along these lines: “They don’t really care” and “They’re ungrateful.” They turn into appreciation grinches. Their inner Grinch steals away their ability to see the truth that not all forms of appreciati on are created equal. What they need is an ‘ah ha’ moment, where they stop trying to force-feed appreciation to others in the way that makes sense to them. They need to take the time to understand what the real issue is: not everyone feels valued and appreciated in the same way.In my book, The 5 Languages of Appreciation at Work, I identify five ways to show others how much you really do value them - through Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Quality Time, Tangible Gifts and Physical Touch. When taught to give individualized authentic appreciation- what others truly value â€" the inner Grinch fades away, and a new colleague emerges. This renewed person is now the one who leads the charge in making sure everyone feels uniquely valued and encouraged. That’s a journey we can all appreciate. This article was co-authored with Dave Tippett, PHR, the Director of On Site Learning and Consulting at The Employers’ Association. How to Set and Achieve Goals

How to Set and Achieve Goals How to Set and Achieve Goals Goals are objectives, targets, purposes, intentions, and plans that you intend to achieve. They can be personal or support the objectives of your work organization. Whether your goal is  a promotion at work, a streamlined work process, a new customer, a published article, an exercise program, or weight loss, the goal must be your goal. You are less likely to achieve your manager’s goal, your spouse’s goal, or the goal you think you ought to work on this year. Set Goals Based on Values Hyrum Smith, the founder of Franklin Quest, later Franklin-Covey Inc., developed a Success Triangle that puts governing values at the base of the goal-setting process and recommends linking every goal to a governing value. For example, if diversity in the workforce is a value your organization espouses, then at least one goal must further diversity. Every goal should be linked to a governing value. Establish short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals based on  the solid foundation of your values. If your goal is congruent with and allows you to live your most important values, you are more likely to accomplish the goal. Gene Donohue of TopAchievement.com suggests setting goals in all aspects of your life to maintain your  life balance. You are less likely to experience  warring  priorities if every aspect of your life has a value-based goal. He suggests setting goals in the following areas: Family and homeFinancial and careerSpiritual and ethicalPhysical and healthSocial and culturalMental and educational Listen to Your Positive Voice Each of us has the voice of our subconscious, judging self in our heads. On a daily basis, you engage in self-talk and comment on each situation you encounter. You discuss events and plans in your mind. Your commentary is both positive and negative. Positive thoughts and planning support the accomplishment of your goals. Negative thoughts and comments undermine your self-esteem and self-confidence and negatively impact your ability to accomplish your goals. Listen to your voice. You can change its tone by believing in yourself and in your ability to accomplish your goals and resolutions. If you are a manager, one of your more important tasks is to support the development of positive self-esteem by your staff members. Your positive outlook and belief in their success at accomplishing great goals  foster  their increased self-esteem and self-confidence. This, in turn, magnifies their ability to accomplish more and contribute more to your business. Paint a Vivid Outcome Traditionally, goals were established around measurable outcomes. But don’t tie yourself to setting only measurable goals; you may find yourself concentrating on the trivial because it is measurable rather than on your most important outcomes. Sometimes the most important goals- the nonurgent, critical goals- are hard to measure. “Explore alternatives for a business  in  the World Wide Web” is tough to measure, whereas the steps are easy to measure. “Learn about new options and think about  performance management” is tough to measure in any significant way. As you move up the management ranks, the key measurable aspects of your job will likely be the results produced by your reporting staff. With hard-to-meausure goals, start with a picture in your mind that describes the outcome you are seeking. Make the picture as vivid as you can. Write Your Goals Writing out your goal is your commitment to achieving the goal. Its a powerful statement compared with half-formulated thoughts in the back of your mind. It is the conscious promise to yourself to pay attention to the accomplishment of the goal. Writing out potential action plans and due dates  make  the goal even more powerful. Share Your Goals With People Who Are Important to You If you are certain your significant others will support your goals, share them. Your manager is likely to support your accomplishment since your success is her success. Honestly  assess the ability of your family members, peers, and friends to provide support. In close relationships, many different feelings, experiences, and historical events are at play. If you don’t believe you will have wholehearted support, keep the goals to yourself. Check Goal Setting and Achievement Progress Regularly One of the weaknesses of any annual appraisal system  is the lack of frequency of progress and success measurement and tracking. You are most likely to accomplish the goals you set if you review them daily as part of your normal planning process. Whether you use a paper planner, a smartphone, or a computer, enter your goals and schedule daily and weekly actions that support their accomplishment. The discipline of the daily review is a powerful goal accomplishment tool. Take Action to Identify and Eliminate Obstacles to Goal Setting Success Simply tracking your goals daily is not enough. If you’re unhappy with your progress, assess what is keeping you from accomplishing the goals. Ask yourself questions such as, “Is this goal really important?” Perhaps reevaluate the goal. ”Are there specific obstacles you are experiencing which are interfering with your ability to accomplish the goal?” In this case, make  action plans  to remove the obstacles or seek help from a coworker, friend, or family member. If you are not making progress on a particular goal, attempt to do a root-cause analysis to determine why. Only by honestly analyzing your lack of progress can you determine the steps to take to change. Reward Yourself and Celebrate Goal Accomplishment Even the accomplishment of a minor goal is cause for celebration. Don’t depress yourself with thoughts about all that you still have to do. Celebrate what you have done. Then move on to the next milestone. Goals and New Year Resolutions Change Periodically look at the goals you have set. Are the goals still the right goals? Give yourself permission to change your goals and resolutions based on changing circumstances. Don’t spend an entire year failing to achieve a particular goal. Your time is better spent on achievement than on beating yourself up for lack of progress. Maybe you made the goal too big or maybe you set too many goals. Do an honest assessment, change what needs to change, and move on. Paying attention to these guidelines can make all the difference in your life and help power your success.

Foreign Language Skills See High Demand in Legal Market

Foreign Language Skills See High Demand in Legal Market Foreign Language Skills See High Demand in Legal Market Foreign language skills don't just come in handy when you're on vacation - they can also give your legal career a boost. Bilingual lawyers are in strong demand, according to a survey of attorneys from Robert Half Legal on the topic of foreign language skills. In fact, 42 percent of respondents we interviewed from the largest U.S. law firms and companies said that the legal market was seeing an increase in legal jobs requiring lawyers with foreign language skills. The demand for foreign language skills is among the top trends influencing hiring in the legal field. Specialized skills are part of what makes you valuable to employers. Know your own worth - visit Robert Half Legal's salary center now for updated legal salary ranges. Spanish in greatest demand among foreign language skills Spanish is the most sought-after language according to our survey, with 88 percent of respondents answering that Spanish was the most in-demand foreign language. This trend, in part, reflects the nation's growing Hispanic population, which is most evident in states such as California, Florida, New York and Texas. In these regions of the country, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofits frequently request Spanish-speaking attorneys and legal support professionals for legal secretary, legal administrator and paralegal positions, as well as other legal jobs. Most positions are project-based and often involve document review and translation work for litigation or Latin American business expansion. In addition, law firms located in areas with large Spanish-speaking populations are seeking bilingual staff with experience in family-based and employment-based immigration law. These states and other regions with large Hispanic constituencies are also seeing an increase in bilingual legal jobs in the public sector. More and more local government entities are seeking to fill full-time law jobs with bilingual legal professionals. Rising demand in the legal market for Asian language skills Ranking second among desirable languages in the survey was Chinese, a finding that echoes a larger legal hiring trend of more Asian language-speaking lawyers in cities like Los Angeles and New York. While Chinese, particularly Mandarin, leads Asian languages in terms of demand, attorneys who are fluent in Japanese and Korean are also highly marketable. Robert Half can help you stay up to date on the latest job market trends, spot opportunities and dodge obstacles in your professional path. Subscribe to our blog. Automotive, high-tech industries hiring bilingual corporate counsel Industry trends are favoring corporate lawyers with foreign language proficiency as well. For example, the automotive industry is hiring bilingual corporate lawyers for litigation, while patent attorneys are in demand in the technology industry. This latter trend is especially true for software and cell phone companies that are based in Asia or doing business on that continent, as well as those litigating their competitors' suspected patent infringement. These legal jobs are also mostly project-based and commonly consist of exhaustive document investigation. Foreign language skills have an ongoing importance for corporate legal departments looking to fill in-house counsel and paralegal jobs on a permanent basis. But while many of these new bilingual roles are temporary, ongoing demand could result in a steady stream of work for legal professionals. Junior corporate lawyers and recent law school graduates, for instance, are finding rewarding contract work in global-minded companies. Foreign language skills and your legal career It remains to be seen just how great an impact on legal jobs will result from globalization and immigration - not to mention policy changes in these areas. But as you consider the steps along your legal career path, bear in mind that the need for legal professionals who know a foreign language should continue as more law firms and companies focus on serving a more multicultural and globalized marketplace. With office locations throughout North America, Robert Half Legal specializes in placing lawyers, paralegals and legal support personnel with law firms and corporate legal departments. Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing

Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing Although much of the hydraulic fracturing debate focuses on unseen effects below ground, the surface impacts of drilling and ongoing activity are in plain sight. Operators make their own roads to carry heavy equipment to and from the well site. They run pipelines, install water-pumping systems, build power grids, and dig storage ponds for wastewater. Each of these activities is a potential point of community conflict, and also adds to the wells operating costs. Everyone stands to gain from emerging technologies that increase production efficiency and reduce surface impacts. Accordingly, the U.S. Secretary of Energy Advisory Boards natural gas subcommittee in 2011 recommended 20 measures to help shale gas producers build and keep public support for their surging industry. The subcommittees final report urged wider adoption of technologies that reduce water use, prevent atmospheric emissions, protect ground water, and minimize disruption of the local environment. Something in the Water In a single operation, some 2 million to 10 million gallons of water are injected into the wellbore along with chemicals and abrasives that free oil or gas trapped in shale. Water consumption and wastewater management are two sides of the same controversial coin in unconventional drilling. Energy companies and some environmental groups alike are optimistic about new technologies and best practices that address these issues and maximize production efficiency at the same time. Effective frack lengths: Gas Fracturing vs. Water. Image: GasFrac Water scarcity threatens the industrys ability to profitably drill shale oil or gas wells in a number of potential deposits in dry western states. Buying and transporting water to these fields is costly and the market is competitive. Even in areas of abundant water, researchers say withdrawal for fracking lowers groundwater levels and affects water available to lakes and stream systems. Fracturing fluids combine fresh water with chemical additives and abrasive proppants like sand. Delivered under pressure through the wellbore, the fluid creates fissures in the underground shale formation to free trapped oil and gas. Most of the fracking fluid is absorbed underground, but between 20% and 40% flows back to the surface over several weeks, carrying with it naturally occurring groundwater, minerals, clays, dissolved solids, hydrocarbons, and radioactive materials. U.S. wells generate about 21 million barrels of this flowback every year. There are already identified and accepted best practices that enlightened energy companies should engage in immediately, said energy subcommittee member Prof. Stephen Holditch, head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas AM University. In fact, most oil and gas operators already follow these best practices or they are developing plans to apply these ideas. The concept of reduced emission completions establishes procedures and tools that minimize the risks and headaches of water management and reduce the likelihood of hazardous emissions or spills that impact local water and air quality. Dry Idea So-called waterless fracking is something of a Holy Grail in the shale gas industry. Innovations are available or in the wings that substitute water with gases, gels, or supercritical fluids, often with properties that justify their cost by stimulating more energy production. Canadian company GasFrac (Calgary, AB, Canada) specializes in waterless fracking using liquid petroleum gas. The companys closed-loop set up combines specialized storage tanks, blenders, pumps, and mixing equipment. LPG is fed from tanks into pressurized sand blenders. The result is a gelled LPG-sand fracking slurry. The company claims 90% to 100% of the LPG can be removed from the production stream. The DryFrac approach, developed by Praxair (Danbury, CT), combines sand and liquid carbon dioxide in place of water. Energy companies have long used CO2 to rekindle production from older vertical wells. The DryFrac technique adapts the practice for unconventional extraction. The technology uses the companys CO2 blenders to prepare the mixture, which is injected down the wellbore with high-pressure pumping equipment. The company states that 30% to 50% improvement in initial production rates are possible in water-sensitive areas, primarily because CO2 has lower viscosity than water and can create more complex fractures and fracture connectivity. The pressurized CO2 vaporizes, helping to energize the production stream for increased initial recovery of oil or gas. Engineers have reported some success with experimental methods that use CO2 or other liquefied gases. General Electric is looking at chilled supercritical fluid CO2 through its Ecomagination green-energy research program. GEs goal is to reclaim CO2 waste products from coal-fired power plants for use and ultimately re-use in fracking fluids. Researchers at Colorado School of Mines say their cryogenic fracking technique injects -321 degree F liquid nitrogen or CO2 into heated shale formations, where the temperature and pressure differences create bigger fissures that increase production. Liquid nitrogen evaporates underground, eliminating the need to process it as flowback. All these waterless techniques sidestep the problem of saturation that can cause clay formations to swell and block the release of oil or gas. Cleaner Completions The atmospheric emission of methane from unconventional oil and gas production is a contentious issue. In January 2015, tougher new EPA rules took effect to reduce production-related atmospheric releases of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), methane, and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). All told, EPA expects the restrictions to cut 2015 emissions of methane by 1 million tons, of VOC by 190,000 tones, and of HAPS by 12,000 tons. The rule, among other actions, requires the use of reduced emissions completion (REC) practices wherever they are feasible. Until now, operators could choose to vent or flare the gas produced through flowback during the well-completion and testing stage. The new rule allows that practice only in tandem with REC methods. In addition to conflicts when flaring is performed in high fire-risk areas or near residential areas, the practice wastes natural gas and other hydrocarbons that could be sold. REC methods help energy companies cash in on gas that would have been burned off, while leaving less waste material to clean up and dispose of when the jobs done. In the basic REC set-up, flowback from the wellhead is piped through a sand trap to remove most of the particulate content and into a three-phase gas/liquid separator. Marketable gas and condensate (liquid hydrocarbon) are directed either to a dehydrator or directly to the sales line. The remaining fracking fluid flows to open pits o r tanks to await processing for discharge or disposal. Emerging technologies like these and more like them in the wings could make fracturing more attractive, both above ground and at the bottom line. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Learn more at the ASME Hydraulic Fracturing Conference 2015. For Further Discussion In fact, most oil and gas operators already follow these best practices or they are developing plans to apply these ideas.Prof. Stephen Holditch, Texas A&M University

How to Not Be Bitter in a Job Search

How to Not Be Bitter in a Job Search How to Not Be Bitter in a Job Search 6After months or even weeks, it’s easy to start feeling defeated when searching for a new job. This can be especially true if others you know are landing something new while you continue to march along. Although you might be feeling stuck and disgruntled, you don’t have to be bitter in a job search. From taking a few minutes to collect yourself to changing your job search techniques, there are several ways to get yourself moving again. Check out the list below to get you started! Here are eight ways to not be bitter in a job search when you are feeling defeated. Find some motivation. Depending on your personality, motivation could come in the form of a book, some quotes, or music. When you are feeling a bit bitter and defeated, pick up a motivational career book, check out some job search quotes for luck, or turn on some of your favorite music. Take a breather. Sometimes you just have to walk away, and that is okay. Taking a break can help you to recharge and refresh. After as little as 15 or 30 minutes, the job search may not feel as daunting. Have some fun! With a job search being like having a job, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the daily job search grind. Rather than pushing yourself to the edge, make time to fit in some fun activities. If you like to run, spend a few hours searching and then go burn off some stress. The fun doesn’t have to be extravagant, just an activity that you enjoy and will help you to feel positive again. Take a risk. Whether you are scared of risk or embrace it, take a risk in one way to move your focus. It doesn’t have to be big, but it should be something you wouldn’t normally do. Perhaps you follow up with a phone call rather than an email. Or, you could apply to a job you really want, but don’t feel like you have enough experience. Switch up your schedule. As creatures of habit, it is easy to fall into a schedule and feel comfortable. But, this is also where many of us begin to feel stuck. If you search in the morning, try moving your schedule to accommodate an afternoon search. Create a goal and reward system. Even though we are all adults here, like childrens chore charts, a goal and reward system can be highly effective. Sure, you have to power through some uncomfortable parts of your job search, but in the end you’ll be rewarded. You could reward yourself with something small, but special, for every 15 applications you send out or for every interview you land. Reaching those goals will make you feel good, as will the reward. Try new techniques. You may have a few job search techniques that you have found to be very successful for you. However, when you are feeling defeated, trying something different can breathe new life into a search that is a bit stagnant. Consider looking for nationwide jobs that can be done remotely. Or maybe consider searching different industries and using different keywords. Ask for help. We all need help at some point. If you feel that bitter about your job search, it never hurts to reach out and ask for help. Check with family and friends to see if they have any tips to offer. Don’t forget to reach out to your network too! Looking to change careers? Start your job search here!

This many Americans would give up their phone for coffee

This many Americans would give up their phone for coffee This many Americans would give up their phone for coffee Coffee really is the greatest, isn’t it? It tastes good, it wakes you up, it warms you up in the winter and cools you off in the summer (as long as you add ice to it) and though many studies say it is slowly killing you, it does help you be more productive (and tolerate your coworkers.) This is why so many people love it. In fact, in the new  McCafé’s Feelin’ Good Summer Survey, 1,000 U.S. adults in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles were asked about their love of coffee and other moments that contribute to their everyday happiness and    nearly two out of five (38%) would be willing to go out a day without their smartphone than abstain from coffee for an entire 24 hours. We know how addicted we all are to our phones, so that is a rather significant statistic.Americans will also sacrifice oral hygiene for a good cup of coffee.  More than a third (34%) of respondents said they prioritized drinking coffee over brushing their teeth if they only had 10 minutes to get ready in the morning.  More than half (55%) of Americans would give up chocolate before they’d give up coffee for 6 months .People would give up a better commute for coffeeThey are also willing to shell out some serious cash to quench their caffeine thirst. On average, New Yorkers would pay $33 for the last iced or cold coffee drink on a hot summer day. Of course, many New Yorkers already pay upwards of $5 for the average cup of coffee though so this isn’t much of a stretch.Coffee apparently also has miracle powers. Over 50% of Los Angelinos would choose a morning coffee ahead of a commute with little traffic. And sometimes coffee also beats love, or it does in Chicago at least.  Chicagoans (57%) said coffee can turn around a bad morning better than a sweet goodbye from a partner or family member (51%). Coffee will never disappoint you (unless you spill it on yourself.)
